An collection of the legendary "Schildbürgerstreiche" (the foolish citizens of the fictional town of Schildbürg) is on display in the only museum of its kind.
400 years ago, the first Schildbürger book emerged, in which 45 tales were told in a classic way. These are extensively documented in the museum, and you can tour the original locations along the Schildbürger walking trail.
On 27 October 1760, the general field marshal August Graf Neidhardt of Gneisenau came into the world in the "Weintraube" pub in Schildau. His mother was staying here while his father was being redeployed during the Seven Year's War. As they continued their journey, the newborn slipped from her fingers and a soldier found it on the road at the village exit in the direction of Sitzenroda. He brought it back to the village, where little Neidhardt spent the first eight years of his life. The Genisenaumuseum in our museum house gives information of his achievements and successes as a brilliant field commander and military reformer!
