Mügeln

Short facts

The town of Mügeln is located in the most southern district of North Saxony. Once the bishop's seat of the diocese of Meissen, Mügeln has much to discover.

The town of Mügeln, with its 28 districts, is located in the southernmost part of the administrative district of North Saxony. There is a lot to discover in the former bishopric of the diocese of Meissen with its 54 square kilometres. Nestled in the hilly landscape are the huge plantations of the Saxonian orchards, which especially in spring offer unforgettable experiences for nature lovers. The former Marienthal Monastery in Sornzig, built in 1241, is considered to be the cradle of Saxon fruit growing and can be used today for all kinds of events.

Not only those interested in technology can follow the trail of Saxony's small train tradition. Visitors to Mügeln can take a ride on the puffing "Wild Robert" from Oschatz through the gentle meadow landscape of the Döllnitz valley to Glossen, and visit the once largest narrow gauge railway station in Europe or stop in at the Glossener Bahnslebniswelt with its field railway exhibition and the Field Railway Museum as well as the model railway exhibition - there is no reason to be bored here!

A visit to the local history museum, where guests can also learn interesting facts about the region's commercial development, is a must. There is a wide range of topics. They range from the extraction of kaolin to the traditional production of stove tiles and the manufacturing of paint boxes.

A tour of the "Mügeln Banking Centre" offers unusual views of the city and its charming landscape. The churches in the city are always pleased to welcome guests. The latter can learn, for example, that the builder of Dresden's Frauenkirche, George Bähr, is said to have supplied the plans for the Schweta village church or that St. Mary at Altmügeln was once a pilgrimage church.

Cyclists or ramblers who want to explore the well-signposted cycling and hiking routes can expect even more unique experiences. Experience pure natural tranquillity at the "Märzenbecherwiesen" near Schweta, during a rest at the Gaudlitzer Kranichau with its sea of willowherbs or lily-of-the-valley in spring, on a hike along the nature trail in Kemmlitz or through the forest near Seelitz.

Adrenaline junkies, on the other hand, can enjoy the action of the motocross track on the grounds of one of Kemmlitz's former open-cast kaolin mines.

If you need to take a break in the summer, you can take some time out at the Mügeln public pool, or end the day with a visit to the restaurants and village inns.
