Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk MDR

Short facts

The central television editorial department of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) in Leipzig towers above its surroundings in the south of Leipzig.

In February 1993, MDR moved into the historically protected area of the former Leipzig slaughterhouse. The TV and administration centre combines the renovated old buildings of the former slaughterhouse with a new building complex, the most prominent component of which is the high-rise building. This is also the only fixed point at which the architects break out of the given structure and do not adhere to the materials and the two-storey height expanse of the surroundings.

The construction created one of the most modern television centres in Europe at that time, which since then has risen up like a giant screen above the city. The first broadcast from the new MDR headquarters took place on 14 May 2000. As part of a studio tour you can visit the headquarters and the numerous production studios "Media City Leipzig".
