Kriebstein

Short facts

Kriebstein has a lot to offer, from culture to sports to recreation, making it the perfect place for enjoyable holidays.

Once upon a time, the Zschopau river flowed through a lonely valley with wooded slopes. In the course of Earth's history, the river cut 70 metres into the ground. In the Middle Ages, Kriebstein castle was built on one side on a rugged rocky outcrop, while Ehrenberg castle stood on the other side. Definitely paln in a visit to Kriebstein, the castle built in the early 14th century. It bears the title of Saxony's most beautiful knight's castle – and not for nothing. Admire the Gothic hall, the treasure vault, the knight's hall, the chapel and differently-styled rooms. The vast outdoor area is also impressive.

In the 19th century, the state government of Saxony designed a plan to use hydroelectric power from the Zschopau river to produce electric energy. The area between Mittweida and Kriebethal near Waldheim was perfectly suited for the construction of the dam, which also provided a measure of protection against flooding. Through the accumulation of water masses, completely new landscape emerged. Today, it attracts a large number of visitors to the region.

Recreational opportunities range from culture to sports to rejuvenation, and offer guests the perfect mix of activities for enjoyable holidays. Ships regularly cross the reservoir. Be your own captain by renting canoes or paddle boats, or explore the various trails that lead through the wild and romantic valleys.

Saxony's only floating stage puts on the most varied performances from spring to autumn. See what the Mittelächsische Theater and Summer of Culture have to offer. Breathtaking dance, music, fire and light shows, as well as medieval productions, are guaranteed to offer exciting entertainment for everyone.

The rope course gives you the chance to conquer 85 climbing elements on seven different courses. Net bridges stretch from tree to tree, planks sway over terrifying depths and sometimes the only way forward is by swinging from rope to rope.

Mysterious legends around small, wrinkled shapes come to life in the Kriebelland. Splash around just like in the old days in the outdoor hot tub. Treehouses are the perfect accommodation for the big and small adventurers who have always wanted to live and sleep in the treetops.
