500 Years of Reformation

Luther Window in St. Thomas Church; Photo: LTM/Schmidt
500 years of Reformation will be celebrated everywhere in 2017, and Leipzig will be no exception. The city is the site of Martin Luther’s appearance in the famous Disputation that confirmed his final break with the Roman Catholic Church. Come to Leipzig and follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach, an avowed Lutheran! Exhibitions, music festivals, the Kirchentag on the Way and many other events will bring history alive as they look to the future.

360° panorama TITANIC

photo: Tom Schulze
The Panometer Leipzig is taking its visitors on another journey beneath the waves (until the end of 2017). The TITANIC 360° Panorama revisits the most famous shipwreck of all time and shows the ocean giant as it is today – 105 years after the catastrophe – at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The celebrated panoramic artist Yadegar Asisi is not only presenting the subject of the luxury liner’s demise, but also exploring the age-old human fascination with mastering nature.

Nolde and the "Brücke"

photo: Nolde Stiftung Seebüll
The young expressionist “Brücke” group around Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was fascinated by the outstanding painter Emil Nolde. Their almost two-year creative collaboration with him from 1906 induced the beginning of modern art in Germany. For the first time, 150 of their artworks from painting, drawing and printing are presented in this exhibition as a precious documentation of German art history. Open from 12 February until 5 June

8 & 10 June 2017

Dale Henderson © Daniela Sessa
This June, US cellist Dale Henderson – founder of “Bach in the Subways” – visits Leipzig for two performances at the Bachfest Leipzig. Don’t miss out!

In times where the audience for classical music is shrinking, Henderson decided to take Bach’s music live to the streets - New York City’s subways stations to be exact – in 2010. “Bach in the Subways” was born. Meanwhile, every year for Bach’s birthday hundreds of musicians all over the world perform Bach’s work live in public. It’s authentic, it’s free, and it’s full of joy!
